This Months Nail Tech is……

                    Barbara Brown

What made you decide on a career in nails and when did you start? I was in hairdressing, but was fed up.  After having 2 kids you lose touch with products and so on.  On one of my visits to the hairdressing supplier, I saw an advert for a nail course with Star Nails.  People had always commented on my nails which have always been long, and I have always kept them nice.  The fact that I could work around the kids for now, then increase clients later at my own pace, made my mind up.  I did the course just over a year ago.

What environment do you work in? I work from home and in other peoples homes.  I work on people’s ironing boards.  They are the right width, and if you spill anything it’s cheaper to replace than a table!

What services do you offer and which systems do you use? I offer extensions (gel and acrylic), manicures, nail piercing, nail art and airbrushing.

How many clients do you see per week?  Are you full or part time? I have to work around the kids at the moment, but I have about 15 clients.  Some weeks I do nothing, then all clients need their nails done and I don’t stop for a few weeks!

What part of your job do you enjoy the most and why? I like every part of doing people nails, the delight you see when you have finished a set of extensions or airbrushing makes the work very enjoyable.

How do you advertise? Cards in shop windows sometimes.  I also have a poster in the back of my car, but most of my clients are from word of mouth, or from seeing my nails.  I always keep them bright and loud.

What is your most popular nail art request? What is your favourite piece of nail art? Free hand tiger stripes, or zig zag fading with the airbrush.

What is the weirdest request you have had for any nail service? A client asked if I could in-fill where a broken nail had been damaged, and was being pushed off by a new nail, she had a gap between the old and new nail and wanted this filled.

I you could have your dream come true in the nail world what would it be and why? I would like an extra room at home so I could do this up as a mini salon.

Nail Art competitions

Are you entering any of the nail competitions at the Manchester show?

I’m looking for someone to write a small piece about the competition, build up, nerves, models, prizes, judges, anything.  If you fancy writing a piece, you don’t need to be a professional writer, I’m not!  Please submit your piece to me at the address below.   No matter how long or short your piece is we’d like to read about your experience.
