This month’s nail tech…

                       Heidi Godden

Salon name and town: Thetford Hair and Beauty, Thetford, Norfolk, England

E Mail address: hgodden@yahoo.com

 1.       What made you decide on a career in nails and when did you start? When I was pregnant with James I noticed my nails were long and strong – I also noticed this when I was pregnant with Jack.  It seemed the only ties I could grow my nails was when I was pregnant and as I have no intention of doing that again, I gave up on having longer nails, my natural nails are thin, stubby and always breaking.  Whilst taking one my Slimming World class I noticed a lady with lovely painted nails and she directed me to he salon she has her nails done – the rest is history.

2.       What environment do you work in?  I work in a hairdressers with 1 beauty therapist.

3.       What services do you offer and which systems do you use? Acrylic nail extensions using No Lift Nail products.  Airbrushing is my speciality.  I use Too Much Fun masking and paints.

4.       How many clients do you see per week?  Are you full or part time?  Part-time until Jack goes to school full time in January (Yippee!!!).  I see about 10 clients a week.

5.       What part of your job do you enjoy the most and why? Just seeing the transformation from short nails – sometimes badly bitten ones to lovely elegant ones.

6.       How do you advertise?  Word of mouth mainly – it’s the best advertisement – and a picture and details up in our local tanning shop.

7.       What is your most popular nail art request? What is your favourite piece of nail art?  It’s got to be the tiger stripe designs – seeing this in a magazine got into nail art and it looks so effective.

8.       What is the weirdest request you have had for any nail service?  You will hate this one – it is not so much a weird one but will make you feel ill (thanks, Melle!).  A client wanted her nails airbrushed for her birthday but could not get to the salon so I said I would come to her.  Upon entering her house the first thing was the smell and it was all dark, she wouldn’t pull the curtains back in the lounge and the lights didn’t work, there were dirty plates scattered on the floor and the cat was eating the leftovers.  There was nowhere to sit so we say on the floor, which had not seen a Hoover.  Managed to get a design on her nails, for the life of me I can’t think what it was, I think it was the least of my worries!!

9.       I you could have your dream come true in the nail world what would it be and why? To win a nail competition would be lovely but I’m so nervous when it comes to those sorts of things.

10.   Tip to pass on to other nail techs? Always respect your clients and take your time over them – bad word of mouth spreads quicker than good.

Quick nail art tip 2

When either airbrushing of free hand painting add a glittered top coat over the base colour of your design, once dry continue with your design.  You’ll be surprised just how much your design stands out.   Out the Door Northern Lights hologram top coats work extremely well for this as they dry almost instantly.
