This month’s Nail Tech is……….

Laura Whiley

Salon name and town: The Nail Studio, Horsham, West Sussex

Why did you decide on a career in nails? The technician who was doing my nails went mobile, and then I could never get hold of her when I needed a repair. I think she felt it wasn’t worth going out in the car for one or two nails.  My husband became so fed up with me moaning about my broken nail and more or less told me to learn to do it myself.  I did and haven’t looked back.

What environment do you work in? I work at home.  I have converted our study into a nail studio.  The cloakroom is situated next to it so clients don’t have to walk through the house.  I’ve tried to make it look as professional as possible with posters etc and my certificates and a small retail area.

What services do you offer? Acrylic, gel, fibreglass, silk and Jessica manicures.  Nail art, jewellery and airbrushing.

How many clients do you see per week? It varies but on the whole 15-20.  That has almost doubled at the moment because of Xmas.  I hope they come back in the New Year!

What part of your job do you enjoy the most and why?  I enjoy putting on tips with acrylic and when clients give me a free rein with nail art, which allows my creative side to come out.  I love getting to know my clients and of course, taking their money!! (don’t we all!, Melle)

How do you advertise?  I started off by delivering leaflets but that wasn’t too successful. I think the most of my clients came by word of mouth.  But the initial ones were people who had seen my nails, i.e., dance teacher, hairdresser, mums at school, etc.

What is your most popular nail art request? Most of my clients are conservative (boring!), diamantes and transfers are the most popular.  On the whole they are not very adventurous.  My airbrush has cobwebs on it!  I really need practice to gain more confidence in airbrushing.

What is the weirdest request you have had for any nail service?  Sorry, but I haven’t had any!

Tip to pass on to other nail techs?  Use Creative Retention +.  The results I’ve had since using this product are phenomenal!

HOW, WHY, WHERE,

WHAT, WHO?

Any questions you want answering or problems you need help with?  We will be able to help you.  Do you have any solutions to the problems below?  Let me know, phone, fax or write.

Is there an easy way to apply a decal to the entire nail? If the decal or transfer comes in a strip cut just enough to cover the nail (if you have a nail measure all the better).  Soak the decal off the backing paper, just before you apply it to the nail cut a very small slit at the free edge corners and the sides.  Place the decal on the nail and overlap the slits.  Apply topcoat as usual.  An example of a decal over the whole nail in on the back page.  Do you have another way of application?  Let me know
