What
made you decide on a career in nails and when did you start? I
had my nails done while on vacation in Canada last June and loved them so much
the salon gave me brief training. I
have been practicing ever since.
What
environment do you work in?
I have converted a spare room in my house into a salon.
What
services do you offer and which systems do you use?
I do acrylic nail extensions (tip and overlay).
Airbrushed and free hand nail art.
How
many clients do you see per week? Are
you full or part time?
Up until Christmas I was only doing family and friends. Now I have about 10 clients.
I
What
part of your job do you enjoy the most and why?
I love to see clients’ pleasure at the end result. Also the comments from people when they see my nails.
How
do you advertise?
I've just got business cards printed and I am going to put posters in
all local hairdressers and dress hire etc.
What
is your most popular nail art request? What is your favourite piece of nail art?
So far everyone has been pretty conservative, having airbrushed
French manicure from stencils. Hand painted flowers with gemstones are also
popular.
What
is the weirdest request you have had for any nail service?
When I was first asked to airbrush toenails.
I thought this was weird, but it looked so cool I do it on myself all the
time now.
If
you could have your dream come true in the nail world what would it be and why?
To be able to leave my job and do this full time and maybe to have my
own salon in town. Also I would
love an airbrush to be invented that is clog free and cleans easy. (wouldn’t we all, Melle)
Tip
to pass on to other nail Tec’s?
If you have access to the Internet join a nail tech mailing list.
You have access to the knowledge of over 400 Tec’s both experienced and
those starting off and who may be have the same problems to answer your
questions.
10 of Susan’s hand painted tips are shown in the Nail Art Gallery.

DESIGNER NAILS – STENCIL INFORMATION
I have had a few calls asking about the stencils used in the New York nail art featured last month. The stencil is called Buildings and is from Aztek, available from Designer Nails. The stencil and other products including airbrush paints and accessories can be ordered by e-mail sales@desingernails.com or free phone 0800 316 0213. Another top product available from Designer Nails is the Northern Lights Hologram Topcoat. One coat will give a brilliant effect that catches the light beautifully and looks brilliant over multi-coloured nail art. Two coats will give a good glitter coverage that will not take ages to remove like regular glitter polishes. The spa pedicure kit is also available from Designer Nails.
